Yug Purus - Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Yug Purush Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam – A Visionary Leader of India

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, fondly known as the "Missile Man of India" and "People’s President," was a towering figure in modern Indian history. Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected scientists and leaders in India. He served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007 and left a lasting impact through his visionary ideas, humility, and dedication to the nation.

Dr. Kalam's early life was marked by hardship. Coming from a poor background, he supported his family by distributing newspapers. Despite financial constraints, his determination and hard work helped him pursue a degree in aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology. This academic foundation laid the path for his remarkable career in space and defense research.

He joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and later the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he played a crucial role in India’s civilian space program. Dr. Kalam led the development of India's first satellite launch vehicle (SLV-III), which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in 1980. His work on the development of ballistic missiles like Agni and Prithvi under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) earned him the title of the "Missile Man of India."

Dr. Kalam was also instrumental in India’s nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998. These efforts not only established India as a nuclear power but also showcased Kalam’s capability to blend scientific excellence with strategic vision. Despite his technical achievements, Kalam was a man of deep spiritual beliefs, integrity, and simplicity. He never married and lived a life devoted to science, education, and national development.

In 2002, he became the President of India, winning the support of both the ruling party and the opposition, a testament to his popularity and apolitical image. As President, he redefined the role by reaching out to the common people, especially students. He believed that youth were the real strength of the nation and often interacted with them to ignite their minds with his ideas and dreams for a better India. His book Wings of Fire, an autobiography, and India 2020, a vision document for transforming India into a developed nation, continue to inspire millions.

Even after his presidency, Dr. Kalam remained active as an educator and mentor. He visited schools, colleges, and institutions, encouraging students to dream big and serve the country with integrity. He passed away on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong—a fitting farewell for a man who lived and died in service to learning and the nation.

Dr. Kalam’s life exemplifies the idea of "Yug Purush" – a person whose vision, deeds, and spirit define an era. His legacy lives on not only in India’s technological achievements but in the minds and hearts of countless individuals inspired by his words, ideals, and dreams.
